When to use a professional, when to do it yourself
When should you use a professional and when should you do it yourself when building or remodeling? Many people would like to do their own building or remodeling project to save money. Sometimes when you do it yourself you may end up spending more money later if the project is not done right. Sometimes it is less time consuming when you hire someone else to do the job or jobs. Here are some questions to ask yourself when deciding to use a professional or when to do it yourself on your home building or remodeling.
First you should ask yourself how motivated you are. Do you like to tackle big projects and see them through to finish or do you get tired in the middle and the projects just sit halfway done. If you are a halfway done person it is best to hire someone no matter how little the remodel or building job. If you are unsure about what type of person you are take on some smaller projects like painting a room before going full blown into remodels or building projects.
What is your skill level? Do you know enough to do the project or can you learn what you need fast? If it is hard for you to pick up new ideas or do you learn quickly. If it is hard for you to learn you might consider hiring someone for the job. Not everyone can be a professional at everything they do. If you require more time to learn new things the project could go on much longer then needed and frustrate all involved. If you are doing a full construction you should not try to do it yourself no matter what. Hiring out for people to build your home is better. They are aware of all the codes that need met and can get the job in a timely manner.
Do you have time to see the project through to the end? You still have a job outside of your home remodel so ask yourself if you really want to come home after a long day of work to nail down sheetrock. Do you want to be taking away time from your family to do the job or will it just be easier to hire someone? Be honest because remodeling and building is a very time consuming project.
The biggest question to ask yourself is about money. If you are looking at doing it yourself because of money but you don't feel comfortable with the whole project then maybe you should wait until you have the funds to do the project. Don't let money or the lack of money lead you into a project that you don't like.
There are some projects that will require you to hire someone no matter what. Professionals are professionals for a reason. They know all about their area of expertise. They will be able to get the job done in a set amount of time and correctly. If there are problems then they can be held accountable. Don't let money or pride jeopardize a remodeling or building project. Some things you should never try to do on your own unless you are the professional. Major electrical or plumbing and major concrete projects should be done by a professional in that particular field.
When deciding whether to use a professional or when to do it yourself on your home building or remodeling project you should think it through first. Do you have time and experience necessary to see the project through? Do you know enough about the job to get it done right? If you don't have the time or necessary experience to do the job then you can either wait or hire someone. Any project that you do not feel comfortable doing should be done by a professional. There will always be more projects to do around your home at another time. Use some common sense, if you are not sure what you are doing or how to do it call in someone.

Unfortunately we have found that even though we decided to pay someone to do our house remodel it still feels sometimes like it has sucked the life out of our family and family time. We are one our third builder, 18-months behind schedule and $20,000 over budget. The only reason we are not more over budget is because we cut items out like our deck and shed.
